Chapter Four: The Indestructible Joy

The Gladness of Jesus Christ

Is joy your constant companion? Do you find joy in suffering, tribulation, temptation, and trials? Who would you might ask. Maybe moments of happiness, but joy?

Yet, Jesus was full of joy, even during the torture of the cross… looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
– Hebrews12:2 (ESV)

This week’s chapter coincides with our Sunday School lesson of last Sunday in Philippians. Joy is obtainable, it is desirable, and what we should pursue. The key is to find joy not in situations or circumstances but in Jesus.

“Christ not only offers himself as the divine object of my joy, but pours his capacity for joy into me, so that I can enjoy him with the very joy of God.”
– John Piper, page 36

Join me in praying this week that the Father would give all of us a greater gifting of joy.
