Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ

Chapter One: The Ultimate Aim of Jesus

I have asked the Church to join me for the next thirteen weeks to read Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ by John Piper. If you have not yet received your free copy, please let us know this Sunday.

The first Chapter begins with the following sentences: “The created universe is all about glory. The deepest longing of the human heart and the deepest meaning of heaven and earth are summed up in this: the glory of God.”

This goes in the face of the world-view most of us hold. Since we were young we have believed that we were the center of the universe and that life is a pursuit of our happiness!

Yet, Scripture tells us differently. Instead of glorifying ourselves we are to seek after God’s glory. I remember telling my employers, “My job is to make you look good!” and truly I tried to accomplish that. In the same way, we should seek to glorify God in all that we do.

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
– Colossians 3:17 (ESV)

Even Jesus Christ’s aim is to glorify God. He was obedient to the Father to the point of death. His goal was to accomplish God’s plan for our redemption. Piper writes that, “The Christian Gospel is the ‘the gospel of the glory of Christ’ because its final aim is that we would see and savor and show the glory of Christ.”

My prayer for our Church is that we would see and savor God by seeking to give God the glory that He richly deserves.
